This is from clinicals Friday…Well, today was an eventful day. I came in and H was getting the weighted bar 5 dimensional exercise treatment. I also learned that K whom I had worked with on Tuesday had died that morning. It was so strange…you see we are spiritual beings as well as flesh and blood and we will spend eternity in either heaven or hell depending on what we did with Jesus Christ.  As I was working with K, I felt the nudge or impression twice from the Holy Spirit to ask K where he was going to spend eternity and did he know Jesus as his Saviour…I ignored it as D was there two and I thought she would chide me for asking…I let the fear of man overcome the fear of the Lord…and now his blood will be on my hands because the Lord was trying to reach him one last time before he left this earth eternally. I WILL NEVER RETREAT FROM MY FAITH AND OBEDIENCE TO IT AGAIN. I called my son who is a christian and told him and he prayed fro me and said that God would forgive me if I asked because He is faithful and just to forgive us if we confess our sins…it still didn’t take the pain of disobedience away. Life is sooooo short! Anyway, the day went on and we got a shoulder pad from the hydroculator and put it on a client who was complaining of increasing shoulder pain.  The nurse gave her some medicine but it still hurt to do her exercises.  After the treatment she said her shoulder felt worlds better.  We did about 3 or 4 pedal machine exercises with clients.  E. got her arm, wrist and hand splint and her finger splint today. This is to reverse some contracture that happened while she was in her cast. She is responding well.We played balloon toss with Betty who has very poor trunk control. She had to be assisted to sit up by herself. This will get better with practice. This was her first time. She is a very thin woman and needs much muscle strengthening work.  Also today we did PROM on a client who had overdosed on drugs 10 years ago and has been in the nursing home ever since. She is very nonresponsive and has to have the exercises done for her. Her Mother is in the same nursing home and was in the room for the whole 45 minutes of exerxise. I had to stand outside the door and watch for awhile until I felt I was making her uncomfortable so I went back to Therapy and wrote this blog.

I am learning alot in the setting at Autumn.  I see balance training, core body strengthening, abduction and adduction of the legs for leg strength, UE strengthening of arms, triceps and biceps; shoulders and indices grip and manipulation skills, ambulatory training,  warm water soaks for broken but healed arms and wrists with fixated carpophalangeal joints, enduarance exercises for impaired backs, work with Parkinson’s preventative measures to stabilize joints, manipulation of frozen shoulder joints due to surgery and much more.  It is slow moving in the nursing home setting with frquent rests in between sets of exercise or therapy moves but we eventually get it done. Most of the patients are BID so they really gain momentum in   the rehabilitation process.  Some of the work that is done is so the patient can go back home and some is to maintain a normal level of mobility and use in the nursing home itself. It is always something new. Today they baked cookies and we had some fresh from the occupational therapy room oven!

I went to the site today and met with Danielle Beach at Autumn.  She introduced me to Molly the speech therapist and Nichole, the PT who has her Doctorate.  She showed me around and then we started seeing patients right away.  We saw about 7 clients this week who most of them had bid requirements for their therapy.  I met the Administrator and several nurses and other personell.  Everyone was friendly and accommodative.  I was shown the paper work that they do and the charts.  It was an informative and stress free beginning. I enjoyed the process. I filed paperwork in the nurses charts the first two days. I hope to be able to do more next week.
